In the Summer of 2004 my wife and I did a road trip through western Montana. The last place where we spent a bit of time before heading home was Butte. We pulled into town, drove to Uptown, and checked into a room at The Hotel Finlen.
A film (Don't Come Knocking) was in production when we arrived in town. It starred Jessica Lange, Sam Shepard, and Tim Roth. The film was directed by Wim Wenders and written by Wenders and Shepard.
Nearly 50 years earlier an iconic photograph was made from this same hotel. Robert Frank looked out and saw rooftops and mine heads. I looked out a different window and saw True West.
R.I.P. Sam Shepard, 1943 - 2017
